The sector at a glance

Life sciences is the business of discovering, developing, manufacturing, testing and selling products that act on biology — therapeutics and biologics, medical devices, in-vitro diagnostics and laboratory tests, the research tools and instruments underneath all of it, and the contract research, development and manufacturing organizations that do the work for hire. It is the most heavily regulated commercial sector in the economy: what a company may claim about a product is set by the FDA and its international counterparts, not by marketing, and every assertion of efficacy, safety or performance must trace to cleared labeling, an approved indication or published evidence. The market is layered — tools and instrument vendors sell to everyone, CROs and CDMOs sell capacity and expertise, pharma and device makers sell finished products, and payers decide what actually gets used. Buyers are principal investigators, lab directors, heads of R&D, regulatory affairs and quality leaders, clinical operations directors, procurement committees and hospital value-analysis committees, and they buy against validated performance, regulatory risk, reimbursement and switching cost rather than against features. Austin is the anchor market: home to CPRIT, Dell Medical School at UT Austin, a molecular-diagnostics base built by Luminex and Asuragen, and one of the fastest-growing life-science clusters in the United States — though far smaller than Boston, the Bay Area or the Texas Medical Center in Houston.
